العجوز الحكيم والملك حكى أن أحد الملوك قد خرج ذات يوم مع وزيره متنكرين، يطوفان أرجاء المدينة، ليروا أحوال الرعية، فقادتهم الخطا إلى منزل في ظاهر المدينة، فقصدا إليه، ولما قرعا الباب، خرج لهما رجل عجوز دعاهما إلى ضيافته، فأكرمهما وقبل أن يغادره، قال له الملك : لقد وجدنا عندك الحكمة والوقار، فنرجوا أن تزوّدنا بنصيحة فقال الرجل العجوز : لا تأمن للملوك ولو توّجوك فأعطاه الملك وأجزل العطاء ثم طلب نصيحة أخرى فقال العجوز: لا تأمن للنساء ولو عبدوك فأعطاه الملك ثانية ثم طلب منه نصيحة ثالثة فقال العجوز: أهلك هم أهلك، ولو صرت على المهلك فأعطاه الملك ثم خرج والوزير وفي طريق العودة إلى القصر أبدى الملك استياءه من كلام العجوز وأنكر كل تلك الحكم، وأخذ يسخر منها وأراد الوزير أن يؤكد للملك صحة ما قاله العجوز، فنزل إلى حديقة القصر، وسرق بلبلاً كان الملك يحبه كثيراً، ثم أسرع إلى زوجته يطلب منها أن تخبئ البلبل عندها، ولا تخبر به أحداً وبعد عدة أيام طلب الوزير من زوجته أن تعطيه العقد الذي في عنقها كي يضيف إليه بضع حبات كبيرة من اللؤلؤ، فسرت بذلك، وأعطته العقد ومرت الأيام، ولم يعد الوزير إلى زوجه العقد، فسألته عنه، فتشاغل عنها، ولم يجبها، فثار غضبها، واتهمته بأنه قدم العقد إلى امرأة أخرى، فلم يجب بشيء، مما زاد في نقمته وأسرعت زوجة الوزير إلى الملك، لتعطيه البلبل، وتخبره بأن زوجها هو الذي كان قد سرقه، فغضب الملك غضباً شديداً، وأصدر أمراً بإعدام الوزير ونصبت في وسط المدينة منصة الإعدام، وسيق الوزير مكبلاً بالأغلال، إلى حيث سيشهد الملك إعدام وزيره، وفي الطريق مرّ الوزير بمنزل أبيه وإخوته ، فدهشوا لما رأوا، وأعلن والده عن استعداده لافتداء ابنه بكل ما يملك من أموال، بل أكد أمام الملك أنه مستعد ليفديه بنفسه وأصرّ الملك على تنفيذ الحكم بالوزير، وقبل أن يرفع الجلاد سيفه، طلب أن يؤذن له بكلمة يقولها للملك، فأذن له، فأخرج العقد من جيبه، وقال للملك، ألا تتذكر قول الحكيم:‏ لا تأمن للملوك ولو توّجوك ولا للنساء ولو عبدوك وأهلك هم أهلك ولو صرت على المهلك وعندئذ أدرك الملك أن الوزير قد فعل ما فعل ليؤكد له صدق تلك الحكم، فعفا عنه، وأعاده إلى مملكته وزيراً مقربـــاً
